Joys of Parenting - Apology

My wife and I shared a special parenting moment this evening with our three year old son. He had made a couple of poor choices, so I sequestered him to his bedroom for a few minutes of time out. I was in his room explaining that he needed to apologize to Mom for the choices that he had made. I told him to look her in the eye and tell her that he was sorry for what he had done. Before we left the room, I asked if he understood what I expected him to do. He confirmed that he understood, and we both walked down the hall to find Mom. As we were walking down the hall, he asked me, "Why do I need to look her in the eye?" I told him that it was part of apologizing - he needed to look her in the eye so she knew he was really sorry. We soon found Mom and she crouched down so he could apologize. He brought his face near hers, paused for a moment, then dutifully stuck out his tongue so he could lick her in the eye.
